Birds of a Nest
The Birds Nest in Deptford, is one of the last bastions of community pubs in London. It exemplifies the social and cultural role pubs have traditionally played in British culture. It is a place for neighbours to meet and local organisations to hold events in.
This project is the portrait of a community in flux. Starting from the heart of it, the long-standing pub the Birds Nest, it attempts to build a character study of the community through formal portraits of the locals, juxtaposed to images of two contrasting living styles, the new build luxury flats and communal living in the city.
By focusing deep within the microcosm of a pub like the Birds Nest the project intents on exploring the current relationship between humans and the city and looks into how they shape one another. It aims to answer questions about the role the community plays in people’s lives and its value to the society as a whole. Furthermore, it set-outs to discover the effect gentrification has on the community and people’s livelihoods.
